HCV Test


The HCV test, also known as the Hepatitis C virus test, detects the presence of the hepatitis C virus in your bloodstream. Here’s what you need to know:

HCV Antibody Test:

Purpose: To determine if someone has ever been infected with hepatitis C.

Process: The test looks for antibodies to the hepatitis C virus in blood.

Result Interpretation:

Nonreactive: No HCV antibody detected. No further action needed.

Reactive: Consistent with current or past HCV infection. Test for HCV RNA to identify current infection.

Reactive with HCV RNA Detected: Indicates current HCV infection. Link the person to care and treatment.

Reactive with HCV RNA Not Detected: No current HCV infection. No further action required in most cases.

Follow-Up: Re-test for HCV RNA before starting antiviral therapy.
